Are dowel perches safe for birds?

While basic store-bought dowel perches may seem to be convenient and cheap option, they are not truly ideal for your feathered friend's well-being. These uniform and smooth surfaces force your bird to grip in the same position continuously, leading to strain on their feet and joints overtime. The goal is to provide a more natural environment for your birds, mimicking real tree branches. They come in various sizes with bends or slight bumps, allowing your bird to exercise different muscles while maintaining proper grip. Never keeping the same grip all the time. Ensure that your bird has multiple types of perches to choose from and create a comfortable space they can truly enjoy.

Now this does not mean you cannot or should never have a dowel perch. For us, as long as they are not the only option for long periods of time, having one or even a few of them in large enclosures is not truly a problem, unless you see that they are only standing on the dowel perches and not using other natural options too. Many times, when transporting your bird to and from a vet's office for example, you may use a dowel perch in a carrier.

While every attempt is made to make sure the information provided is correct, we always recommend contacting a vet regarding the health of your animals.
