Is metal safe for birds?

At Everglades Bird Supply, we understand that the safety and well-being of your beloved bird are of utmost importance to you. That's why we want to provide you with essential information on how to avoid any potential risks associated with metal objects in your bird's environment.

Fact is metal will always be part of a bird's environment from their enclosures to everyday toys and food dishes. With larger bird's their toys may need metal parts to help prevent having them break. So, this might be a bit confusing since we almost have to use metal parts and we all seems to agree what the metal is made of is also not safe.

Natural ropes are a great option for hanging toys, however the larger the bird is or depending on the type of bird, these ropes can break very fast. This is where metal chains or parts are used to help with the life of the toy.

Many metals, such as lead, zinc, copper, aluminum, and even chrome, can be harmful if ingested by birds. Therefore, we strongly advise against using products that contain these metals - including items such as cages, food and water bowls, and toy parts. Opt for high-quality alternatives made from safe materials like stainless steel.

Nickel-plated Metals:
With nickel-plated metals they are usually a safer option to use around birds. Most of our pear links are made of nickel-plated steel. As long as they are not damaged in anyway and are not being chewed on, they are a great option to use.

With any of our items using metal parts we recommend the following.
Remove and discontinue use of any metal item if shows signs of rusting/corrosion or peeling of the nickel plating. Do not use links or chains as a toy. Links and chains are recommended only to be used to secure accessories and toys to an enclosure. Do not leave links or chains inside enclosures when not securing accessories or toys to them. Make sure links are fully closed when securing to enclosure. Only use parts that are recommended for your bird's size and bite force.

Chewing on Metals:
It is also crucial to prevent your bird from chewing on metal objects. While some toys may have small metal components it's important not to allow your feathered friend to only chew on them or intentionally entice them towards metallic items. This practice minimizes the risk of accidental ingestion of small pieces of metal by your bird. If you see that your bird is only chewing on a metal part, we recommend removing it and trying to find another natural option for securing the toy. Some birds might just need only safe ropes even if they break easily.

Remember: Prevention is key when it comes to ensuring the health and safety of your avian companions. By proactively selecting safe metal products and closely monitoring their interaction with these parts/toys using them, you can help protect them from potential harm while promoting a happy and healthy life.
